Each Thursday as I head to my Pilates class, I pass these birds—not crows, not ravens, cravens—on the side of an empty building in Vashon. They make me smile each time. My friend, artist and performer Steffon Moody, painted them last May, free hand and in six hours (time lapse video). Aren’t they wonderful? The building will shortly be torn down to make room for a new art center. I will be in mourning but I’m sure he has something else artistic and wonderful up his sleeve.

The sheep are arriving for the Vashon Island Sheepdog Trials. Sun, beer, black and white dogs stalking sheep–a great time will be had by all.
Catherine, Called Birdy is one of my favorite books to recommend. I know the reader will have an amazing journey through history with a strong, tenacious, witty, imaginative character. So often, once they have read Catherine, they come back for more of Karen’s books.
Congratulation, Karen your books are so essential for our Kids.

It’s autumn at my house. The colors are splendid.
But here’s the bad news …
It’s much too lovely a day for raking leaves. Think I’ll go in and read…
Except someone is in my chair. Sigh.
Here’s a small portion of the terrific crowd that turned up for the Will Sparrow’s Road launch last Friday. I couldn’t get them all in one photo but I saw lots of friends, several other writers, and many young people. We all talked and then had snacks. Thanks to Nancy and Morgan and the Vashon Bookshop for a great event.
Will Sparrow’s Road is out today, and Publisher’s Weekly has given it a starred review plus named it one of the Best Books of 2012. I suggest you get a copy and see for yourself.

The sheepdog trials returned again to Vashon Island. We had a lovely day watching border collies try to herd sheep. I know now why there is no metaphor saying “smart as a sheep.” They do not make it easy for the poor dogs. For those of you who think it rains here all the time, note the dry grass on the field. I am going outside to do a rain dance (not a pretty sight).
